Pinhole Project, step one.

Research and respond to the following questions. Add images with captions, embed vides, etc.


What is a pinhole camera?


A pinhole camera is basically a completely light-proof box with a small hole for light to come through and no lens. Because there's no lens, the image is inverted once it passes through the aperture, and ont to the film.

Look at some images made with pinhole devices. (Google search).

What are the characteristics? (Colors / tonality / focus / etc.)


Because there isn't a lens to focus or alter whatever is being photographed, the image seems to come out more true to what it actually looks like. That is, it (like you said) shows more depth in the photo and sometimes can have more vibrant colors when the exposure time is longer and with adequate lighting. Here's an example:

I really like how the photo looks flat and very two-dimensional. It gives it a very antique look.

I've noticed with pinhole photographs that there is a lot of depth to the photographs. Seems as though since the pinhole camera takes time for it to capture the picture, it has time to take in a lot of the picture. Although I have found that with these kind of pictures is that they don't really capture the full detail of the scenery. And by this I mean it isn't completely 100% focused, which makes sense.

Here is another example of the depth that I really notice with these pinhole pictures. I find these really stunning and profound. There just doesn't need to be any color in my opinion, these pictures really do say a lot without having any colors to them.

These are two funky, and quirky pinhole cameras I found when doing my research. They transcend your archetypical pinhole camera through the utility of modern containers of consumer goods. The Spam camera the pinhole is located in the middle of the container on a sesame seed while on the iPhone box it is pretty obvious to spot.

Getting the right exposure. How would you solve that problem?

To get the right exposure takes the right kind of light, and space. It is best to avoid any kind of blockage from the sun that would create unfortunate shadows that can ruin the picture. Leaving the pinhole camera in an open area is most optimal when trying to get the best exposure just because there is less chance for some shadow to get caught in the picture.

And, drilling the pinhole with precision. What materials / techniques would you need to know?

It is best, from previous experience, to use a small needle to make the hole. The best technique is to turn the needle while slowly entering it into the surface where you want your pinhole to be. You also do not want to drill the needle in too deep causing the hole to be too big. Spinning the needle will make a smoother hole.

If you were going to build a pinhole camera which design would you choose? Why?


If I was going to make a pinhole camera, I would probably make it out of something like an oatmeal can, because it's cheap, somewhat sturdy, and I like what the cylindrical form would do to the photograph.


Reaching back from pervious experience I would rebuild the shoebox pinhole camera I made in high school for my photography classes. They are the easiest, most fundamental, and simple pinhole cameras one can make and use. Although they may be less convenient in terms of size, they are extremely stable and reliable when taking pictures.

One of the sides has a small hole which creates an image of the outside space on the opposite side of the box. The great thing about these cameras is that one can manipulate the look and decorate the camera as we please. Colors, shapes, and any looks vary on how you want the camera to look. Usually they are squared and need to have a hole for the image to be captured.

This image is a great example of a multiple pinhole image. I chose this image because the colors really define the railing, buildings, and trees portrayed. Although the image looks blurred out or three dimensional, the objects look very defined and clear. I found it a wonderful image deserving of exposure.

One of the biggest issues that might come up while doing a pinhole camera is knowing how to build it in a way that will actually be effective for proper imaging. If you have never been exposed to a pinhole camera then this project will be much harder. I had never heard of such camera so this is something I feel I would struggle a lot with. I would do a lot of research to find a perfect way to make one unique to my likings. Another very important factor in making the pinhole camera is making the right hole and the right size. The measurements have to be correct in order for the image to come out as viewed through the lens. I would use a screw drive or something with a sharp tip to make the hole with precision.

if I were to make a pinhole camera I would try to shape my camera with some type of clay. i would use cardboard and cut it in the shape of a camera, then add clay to the surface of it. There are many that don't have a camera shape, but I would want mine to look like an actual camera. I want people to see my product and know right away it is a camera. I would then paint it with different vibrant colors and add stickers of my favorite characters to make it unique. All this ofcourse after I set it up from the inside.
